Peter A. O’Flaherty is a graduate of St. Francis Xavier University (B.A., 1986), the University of New Brunswick Law School (LL.B., 1989) and the University of London (LSE) (LL.M., 1999). Mr. O’Flaherty has been a member of the Bar of Newfoundland and Labrador since 1990 and a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales since 1999. His preferred areas of practice are maritime law, public law, insurance and general litigation, and advising clients on business law, regulatory and international law matters. Mr. O’Flaherty has presented and written papers to the Canadian Petroleum Law Foundation on “Effective and Efficient Regulation of the Offshore Industry” and to the Canadian Police Association on “Police Discipline: Guarding the Guardians”. He has acted as counsel to the Public Review Commissioner for the White Rose Public Review (2001) and as counsel to the Public Review Commissioner for the Hebron Public Review (2011) under the regulatory process for the review of proposed developments in the Newfoundland offshore area. He was also appointed the province’s first Consumer Advocate under the Automobile Insurance Act and regularly acts as counsel to the provincial police Public Complaints Commission.
